In the last century, Nepal’s rich faunal biodiversity has become considerably depleted due to rapid population growth, excessive resource extraction and infrastructure developments. As a result, the country’s wilderness areas marginalized and habitats are degraded and fragmented resulting increased threats to species. Under this situation, a need was felt for an academic institution to educate, train and produce qualified man power for teaching, research and conservation. Such a thought process led to the setting up of the Department of Zoology under the Institute of Science and Technology (IoST) in Tribhuvan University (TU).

Department of Zoology was established in 1965 with the mandates of producing qualified man power on Zoology, carrying out research, and advising Government on matters of faunal resources. Later, it was upgraded as the Central Department of Zoology, Tribhuvan University (CDZ-TU) in 1987. CDZ- TU has now become a leading institute of Zoology in Nepal using its expertise to advance knowledge and influencing public policy and perception on faunal resources.

Till today, around two thousand graduates have been produced from CDZ. CDZ graduates working in different fields declared the formation of “Alumni Association of the Central Department of Zoology (AACDZ)” in 2019 at the 54th Anniversary Celebration of CDZ to promote the interests, welfare and aims of CDZ-TU and its alumni by establishing and maintaining a mutually beneficial relationship among the members.

The CDZ-TU and AACDZ are planning to organize First National Conference on Zoology: Biodiversity in a Changing World. Considering the current health crisis due to COVID-19 pandemic, we are organizing the conference virtually on 28-30 November 2020.

Aims and Scope of the Conference

The First National Conference on Zoology aims to bring academicians, scientists, researchers, research scholars and students together to share their research findings on all aspects of Zoological Science. The conference will provide an interdisciplinary platform for researchers, practitioners and educators to present and discuss the recent innovations, trends, and concerns as well as practical challenges encountered and solutions adopted in the faunal research and management. The conference will focus on the areas of taxonomy, faunistics, phylogeny, ecology, applied zoology, public and veterinary diseases, genetics, molecular biology, etc. The conference will be a unique platform for exchange of information, ideas and scientific discoveries at the time of rapid human development and global/climate change and the associated risk for fauna.

The National Conference on Zoology will also provide an opportunity to the participants to network, to collaborate and to develop innovative ideas in the research and development.
